Oh, golly, I’m weeping: what a great outcome to a tough situation. It could have gone so wrong. What stars!

Gosh that sounds remarkably like the birth of my second child - except that the ambulance crews made it in time and got the pleasure of delivering my baby instead! Don’t know how you manage on the end of a phone, I’d want to be there … but I guess that’s what you’re trained to do. All LAS staff were much appreciated that night

Made me want to cry for all the wrong reasons. My BBA was distinguished by dh shouting abuse at me in the final stages of labour because he hadn’t wanted me to have a home birth in the first place. The call taker did a fantastic job, however, and he calmed down once he had a job to do. I have now given up hope of having a another child.
just curious about the safety pin thing as we use ampds in manchester and we yet again gone to a new version but i have never seen the use safety pin can you clarify if this was something added to your system or the person themselves added in in a panic just from the point of a health and safety view if a panicky relative uses one and is rather shaky things could easily go wrong please reply

It’s in AMPDS V11.3
Section F (Childbirth-Delivery)
F3 mentions getting the towels and a safety pin, F36 has the instructions to use it if the sac isn’t broken.
Kudos to the EMD though, pretty much word perfect.
Wow, that was incredibly moving. What an amazing experience for a father to deliver his own baby.

aaaw what a sweet BBA story
i wonder who CAC1821 is??? if it were me i’d like to know about this article
and aint it funny how the guy thinks the call was taken in Ilford (all calls are taken in waterloo - ilford is likely to be the telephone exchange)
ive been at LAS control for 2 yrs now, and all together ive had 15 BBA calls (yes i keep count haha - i love my baby calls) and not one of them have been straight forward - they have, infact, all been rather like this… complicated, messy and out of the ordinarry. (the woman who had her twins in the middle of clapham commmon park was a good one - or the woman who didnt even realise she was pregnant untill she started giving birth!!!)
well done CAC1821 - its never easy!!!

they just played transcripts of this and featured the parents on BBC News 24 (just before 10pm today monday 24th sept).
and they showed pictures of an ambulance operator, i’m guessing its the one who took the call.
sounds very cool and collected tho. way to go.
